1916 – 1923
From 1916 to 1923, Ireland faced intense civil unrest. It started with the Easter Rising in 1916, when Irish nationalists rebelled against British rule in Dublin. Although quickly suppressed, this event fueled the fight for independence. The Irish War of Independence followed, with the Irish Republican Army (IRA) battling British forces. The war ended with the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which created the Irish Free State but left Northern Ireland under British control. This division led to the Irish Civil War, between supporters and opponents of the treaty, shaping modern Ireland.
